Manifesto of Detachment: November 14, 2002, scissors and canvas, 2002
Manifesto of Detachment: November 14, 2002 was performed during an opening reception at the Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art. People often associate long hair with youth and feminine beauty. I cut my own hair in order to destroy, re-define, and ultimately question the idea and sociological function of identity. My performance functioned as an announcement of my "Manifesto" to the public through actions instead of words. It is a metaphor for letting go of different attachments in one's life: the past, stereotypes, prejudice, and identity.
